January 14, 2000 Busy Friday Cycle 4, Day 5 |

It's been a busy, busy Friday thus far. Lots
of mommies came in with toddlers and preschoolers, plopped them down in front the toys, and sat around
chatting. Of course, the kids were having none of that, and kept wandering up to their mothers to ask
for various things and gain attention. It was rather funny to watch. Most of the mothers were apparently quite familiar with my predecessor, and kept asking where she had
gone. Sigh. This happens everywhere I go. When I worked at CBA, people kept sending me mail addressed to "Heather Ferguson," and trying to
reach her by phone, demanding to know where she had gone when I told them that I was the "new Heather." Now
I'm the "New Mrs. Mitchell," and these are much bigger shoes to fill. Apparently, Mrs. Mitchell was some
sort of demigoddess, friendly with everyone and knowledgeable about all things literary. Well, I'll do
my best, but people need to realize that Mrs. Mitchell was here for about ten years; I'm still new! I don't
know all the children's names yet, but I'm getting there as fast as is humanly possible. I put up a whiteboard in the Young Adult section. I'm planning to post weekly URLs and weekly surveys; today's
is: I don't know how much response I'll get, but I'm doing my best to try to drum up some kind of involvement
from these local teens. We're also starting a teen advisory board to allow them to give their opinions on
library issues. They just seem so uninterested and apathetic; perhaps when we get the new addition built (starting
this summer!) and add the snack bar and computer lab, they'll be more excited. Eric's friend isn't coming up this weekend after all, so the cleaning has been delayed until this weekend
itself. This makes me happier; I hate quick cleaning. I always end up stashing things in closets and in boxes,
under the pretense of "I'll get to this later." Later usually means "the next time we move." When we got
married, Grandma gave us a collection of books about being "Messies" and recovering from such. Think she knew about
the bulging boxes under our bed? We also might go looking at houses this weekend! Yay! Not that we're planning a move anytime in the near future,
but going to open houses is one of our favorite weekend hobbies, and it's one we haven't done in a while. Plus,
we need to get a look at how houses are priced in neighborhoods closer to Eric's new job! He's now the LAN
technician at his company's new plant, and will start work there in about two weeks. Although the offer did
indeed end up lower than we would have liked, they committed to six-month evaluations for the time being. We're
getting closer to being home owners! I'll be glad to move; our apartment is nice, but I'm not overly fond of the
ownership. We had a little snow yesterday, and every road in town is fine except the road in our complex, which
doesn't get city maintenance. They're solid sheets of ice! Well, I have to get back up to work. There's a preschool fair at the library tomorrow, and the local preschools
are all going to be coming in this afternoon to set up their displays. Only one has been in yet, and they have
a huge gingerbread house sitting on their table. It'll be a hoot trying to keep that from being damaged
when the crowds come in! Maybe the Montessori school, who always brings in toys, will keep the kids otherwise
occupied. This is a very affluent town, as I've mentioned before, and some of these preschools are expensive! I
don't remember anything like this in my town when I was growing up. Perhaps that's just by virtue of the fact that
I was a child at the time and blissfully unaware of anything monetary, but still. I believe my nursery school was
non-profit, and I wasn't hurt by not attending a ritzy school for wealthy kids. Though maybe that meant that my
mother wasn't welcome to hand out with the mommoes and their preschoolers at local libraries on Friday mornings... |
