First Snow

This morning, when we awoke, we found that the world had been blanketed in lots and lots of snow. It felt as though God was comforting our family with a beautiful, white, albeit cold, hug.

I decided to try to take my mind off Cressida's passing by taking Sam out for his very first romp in the snow. Last year, he was too young to really understand anything that was going on, so this was a completely new experience for him; he stared, unprompted, out the window when he woke this morning, and giggled as we watched Eric scrape his snowy car windshield.

After clothing myself in plenty of warm layers (why don't they make snowsuits for adults?), I bundled a very curious Sammy into his new-to-us snowsuit and boots, hat and mittens. I wrapped one of Daddy's scarves around his neck, and stood back to enjoy the sight of my handiwork. This is what followed over the next half hour; I've taken the liberty of translating my son's thoughts, which were unmistakably readable from his expressions.

Ready to go out and play!

Oh, boy! We're going to do something fun now! This is a silly outfit you put on me, Mommy, but I know something cool is going to happen. I'm ready! Let's go!

Smiling in the snow

Oh, boy, I knew we were going outside! Are we going to the park? Are we going for a walk? Are we...

Now what do I do?

Wait a minute. It's kind of cold out here, and I'm having trouble picking up my feet. What's wrong with the ground? I'm a little bit confused, Mom.

Picking up snow

Maybe if I pick up a little bit of this white stuff, I'll be able to figure out what's going on.

Darn, I can't quite operate my fingers; they're all stuck together. I'll just touch the white stuff instead. "Snow," you called it? Pat, pat, pat.

Falling down

Oh, help! I'm falling down! My feet won't move, and my hands won't work, and the scarf is in my face, and there's stuff blowing in my eyes, and I can't stand up!

Waah!

This isn't fun! This is no fun at all! I'm cold, and miserable. I can't walk, and I can't play! I want to go inside, right now! I miss my cars and my books!

Extremely ticked off

How could you do that to me, Mommy? That was a mean, mean trick! Make all that white stuff go away right now! It better be gone by this afternoon, or I'm going to tell Dad. I mean it!

(He felt a little better after some cocoa and some Cheerios. He's still giving dirty looks out all the windows, though.)
