Twittering with Carol got me thinking.
Mind you, I’ll eat most things on there, myself; I was just randomly trying to think of things that gross out people I know. (I didn’t put down onions, which squick my dad, because hating onions is just wrong.
) I don’t like beets at all; non-animal-based food shouldn’t bleed when you cut it! Also, I find mayonnaise and prepared mustard disgusting, though I will cook with mustard if it’s not too prominent in the finished product.
If you picked something like red meat or fish, go ahead and comment as to whether it’s the whole genre or only specific culprits that turn you off.
POSTSCRIPT: This is funny. Tonight’s dinner, for a treat, is “diner’s choice,” and all three of us (Eric being out for the evening) are grossed out by what the others are eating. (Well, not me, so much, but they wouldn’t have been my choices for dinner.) Gabe: Frozen chicken nuggets, pretzels, juice (V8 Fusion, with the “hidden” veggies). Sam: Instant oatmeal, juice. Me: Leftover bison meatloaf, done jelly-roll style with spinach and cheese, and water.
(The boys will be hungry again in a while, I predict, at which time I may try to cajole them into eating vegetable soup.
)

I have a strong aversion to anything that gets very slimy when cooked, such as the eggplant. Beets I hate as well, but mostly because they taste like dirt to me. I *cannot* taste the “sweetness” that people talk about. Spinach I can take only certain ways (preferably with lots of garlic and lots of olive oil).

I love this poll. The only thing I refuse to eat is beets. My grandmother ate blood red canned beets when I was a child and it sooooo grossed me out. Plus, you don’t see a whole lot of beet recipes.

I refuse to eat squid or octopus. Just seeing it in the store makes me run for the bathroom. Nasty.

I don’t claim to love beets, or eggplant, or sushi with raw fish, but I’ll eat them. I can’t however manage to get past certain things like calamari when it’s the little octopuses (octopi?) with all the tentacles on it, or escargo. I also refuse to eat liver. I’ve tried it on numerous occasions but still can’t stand it. Things like okra and eggplant aren’t foods that I’ve had very often, being a German-raised Northwesterner.

I won’t eat pork. I’ve hated it since I was a little girl.

Maybe I shouldn’t have put “I’ll eat anything!” because there are things that I choose not to eat, for various reasons - like mushrooms, olives and raw fish. However, I will most likely *try* anything. Recently, I tried esgargot and blood sausage, but I’ve also had chickens feet, jellyfish and sea cucumber. MMM… Dim sum, anyone?
Great poll! Can I steal it?

Veal and squid (even disguised as Calamari ;-)) — I used it as bait for an entire summer, and wouldn’t ever eat it…oh, and tongue and those organ dishes. Except I did once enjoy a tasty (cooked of course) moose liver…

Just wanted to say that I share your hatred of mayonnaise and mustard… also cream cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese, sour cream, pudding… anything with that kind of texture…

I voted for beets and sushi. I can’t even stand to look at either of them. The thought of raw fish…um, no thanks. One of my biggest aversions based purely on preference is sauerkraut. I cannot deal with the smell of it, the look of it, or even the idea of it. I won’t eat liver either because it grosses me out to even think of it bleeding on a plate.
I am allergic to shell fish, so I have a natural aversion to any of that. I cannot even tolerate the smell of it, physically or emotionally. Meaning, too much of it around me will incite a reaction, like swelling and rashes, but also turning of the stomach. I’m sure the mental part is at least in part due to the allergy and my fear of it, but it has the ability to make me sick like nothing else. Even before I knew I was allergic, at about age 18, I wasn’t a fan so I don’t think I’m missing much at all.
Other than what is above, I will eat - or at least try - anything.

white or yellow onions raw or cooked
unless pureed in salsa so that I do not know they are there.
I used to hate *all* onions, but now I love most of them– save for the ones I mentioned that get blubbery when cooked. Gah. That grosses me out.
Cactus fruit kind of gagged me, too.

I really like breaded, fried okra. So non-healthy but so good if seasoned properly. Never had it any other way though either.

I said beets, but really I will eat pickled beets, and rather enjoy them. Cooked beets though, no way. My grandmother used to cook up buttered beets and MAN those were disgusting. They’re pretty much the only vegetable I flat out refuse.

Organ meat. I am completely averse to ever trying liver, gizzards, sweetbreads, tripe, calves’ brains, pretty much anything inside an animal that wasn’t a muscle. Barf-o-rama.

No thanks on pork(including ham but not bacon), but I am getting more and more intolerant of most meat as I get older. Sigh. I get an upset stomach from it far more often than not, so I may yet become an unwilling vegetarian. I also don’t like eggs or ketchup.
I am a mom to an almost 8 year old girl who LOVES sushi, and both of my kids have very varied diets.
