A Flickr friend just got one of these for her daughter, who lost a tooth, as a way for the Tooth Fairy to more easily go back and forth on tooth nights. It mounts onto your baseboard. I actually squealed when I saw the picture of hers, and I really, really want a couple now (the sculptor is out of stock at the moment; this one has already sold).
But now Eric says that the concept is a little creepy. “Have you read English fairy mythology?” he says. “Fairies are not good.” Another online friend said it would have scared her when she was a child, too.
So I ask you!
Just curious. I still think they’re precious.
In reference to the tooth fairy, I would be all for it. But Eric is right, evil would would freak me out.
I’d have thought cute, and I still kind of do, except I also can’t get that Torchwood episode completely out of my mind. *g*
fairies are cute.
except the awful ones on Torchwood
Those freaking scared the holy hell out of me.
While we believe in fairies in our house, there’s just enough Brit influence to keep one eye open.
I mean, I wouldn’t put the door in a bedroom. Maybe the kitchen. they might get into trouble, but I would be less likely to wake up tied to the bed.
I love those doors — you can find them in all kinds of “witchy” online stores. I see them usually by a home’s entrance.
Look at these:

What does English Fairy Mythology have to do with the tooth fairy who is an American construct? Sculptor helpfully points out the door only allows good fairies to enter.
THOSE are cute. They are well crafted and imaginative.
The “enchanted” fairy doors, that Cetta linked to above ARE evil! Those are a NON-imaginative commercial rip off. I met the man who “created” them…. grrrr.
Eric is correct about OLD WORLD Fairies. Those fairies have a history in folk lore of being mischievous and worse! However,as with folk songs and folk tales…they change with each generation and even each Telling (singing). I believe we are witnessing a NEW generation…a new mythology~ Urban Fairies.

See, Netter, that’s what I said.
Jonathan – interesting site! And you have no idea how much you just made me miss Ann Arbor…
Torchwood was the only negative reference I personally had, though it was effective! And I considered using the kitchen instead of bedrooms, as well, though I’m not sure stairs would be an adequate deterrent for a mischievous sprite.
Heh. I was going to mention the Urban Fairy doors too. I love the idea. And Fairies are magic; what’s to stop you putting a “magic spell” on the door to keep the bad fairies out?
I think it is adorable. Not all fairys are evil. They are just mischevious. If you think they are bad then they will be. So always keep good thoughts!!
Your Defeat the Winter Doldrum swap partner!
I’ve tried emailing you!!
I went to Fired Up! and painted a ceramic faerie with a box underneath. When A. starts losing teeth, the tooth will go in the little ceramic box and sit on the dining room table…the next morning, hopefully there will be something very cool in the box for Miss A.!
I painted it to look like her, down to the black stripe in her blonde hair. (And yes, it is a female faerie.)
As for faeries being creepy…I honestly think Tinkerbell was mischevious for a reason…
“Jonathan – interesting site! And you have no idea how much you just made me miss Ann Arbor…”
Sorry, Carrie.
PS. Tinkerbell is HOT!
Hi Carrie
I am your partner for the Defeat Winter swap. Are you getting my emails? Let me know.
MSP – I’m here, I’m here!
I had to go digging through my new SPAM filter, though; it’s all shiny and aggressive and cute.
If you’re looking for fairy doors, check out my little store on Dawanda.com (http://weefolkoutfitters.dawanda.com) or my other little store at BigCartel.com (http://weefolkoutfitters.bigcartel.com).
As for the evilness or goodness of fairies, I think they’re like people — some good, some bad. I relate more to gnomes, myself… they’re not so hyper.
I have a fairy door by my front door. I have also heard them referred to as a gnome door too. I get more questions as, “what is that”? Then when I explain it to them, they look at me a little confused. However, it shouldn’t surprise anyone considering I also have gargolyes, suits of armor, and full sized carousel horses in my living room. Oh, and I live in an English tudor! Just adds to the decor
I think its a cute door. When I first looked at it, I didn’t think fairy. I thought it was something Tibetan, or Buddhist. So No it doesn’t look evil. Its a symbol of eternal love. So maybe only love fairies wood enter.
lol! His Holiness the Dalai Lama has that symbol on a huge canvas that they hang when ever he speaks. Its beautiful and keeps the guests shaded.
Just thought you should know.
