More ways in which my kids are smarter than half the internet:
SAM: “That’s stupid.”
GABE: “MOM! Sam said ’stupid.’”
SAM (heavy, beleaguered sigh): “If I offended you, I’m sorry.”
GABE: “That’s not a real ’sorry.’”
SAM: “I know. But let’s just play.”
GABE: “Okay.”
Good day to go to the Farmer’s Market. Fresh tomatoes rock! I remember how when I was a kid, my next-door neighbors grew tomatoes in their backyard and sold the extras out front; they just had a box of tomatoes next to a scale and a jar, and it was all strictly on the honor system. We’d run over and buy a few whenever we needed them, and they taste so much better than the fake-ripened hothouse tomatoes you get at the grocery store. It’s like they’re completely different species, almost.
The coffee came from the shop down the block from the market.
Mmmmm, fresh-roasted beans.
It’s a beautiful day, and the walk there and back felt good. My legs are just a little bit tired from today’s run; I added in a little extra speed work, just for fun, after reading a tip in “Runner’s World.” I’ve written about my dislike for Fartlek, in which you basically pick up the pace for random short intervals (”Sprint to that tree!”) and then slow down. The magazine gave me the idea to pick of the pace, instead of racing for time or short distances, for an actual number of footfalls. Eureka! For some reason, this really, really worked for me. I sprinted for forty steps at a time; thirty, where I started, was too short, and fifty required a slightly longer recovery interval than I wanted to do today. I’ll expand over time, but for now, I love this! Thanks, RW!
Olympic ceremonies tonight! Break out the popcorn and tiny flags! ![]()
