So, here’s the deal: the orthopedist (who is not a runner, but who specializes in sports medicine) thought it was a stress fracture from the beginning. I brought up the idea of peroneal tendinitis, and while he agrees it’s a possibility, he doesn’t want to rule out a fracture, either. Here’s something I didn’t know: while you do treat tendinitis with anti-inflammatories, such as ibuprofen, doing that with a stress fracture can delay healing or make things worse. Yikes!
Anyway, only surefire way to test for a stress fracture is a bone scan. I’m having mine on Wednesday. Can you sense how thrilled I am about this? Can you just FEEL how happy I am to be having more scans, more tests… Ahem. Forgive. I yell so I don’t cry (which I’ve already done, thankyaverymuch).
In the meantime, I am booted. My leg is encased in heavy, thick…I dunno, lead weights, it feels like.
I keep accidentally kicking myself in the other ankle with it. Stairs are a fun adventure.
I just want to run. Is that so much to ask? Why does it have to be an obstacle course? Does somebody out there have a voodoo doll with my face on it?
Need chocolate.
Oh, Carrie…if I lived near you, chocolates would ALREADY be on your porch
)) JOY
just an FYI, I found going down stairs was much easier backwards w/ the boot on, sometimes going up w/ your boot sideways one foot at a time helps too. been there done that….praying it heals quickly. I had to get a bone density done and it’s a breeze so while it’s inconvenient it wont hurt a bit! unlike the pelvic u/s I am going to endure tomorrow after ct scan just made them want more tests…I hate doctors!!
Carrie, das Boot is much better than der Crutches.
After I tore my achilles I dreamt of the day that I could get rid of the stupid make-me-fall-off-the-stairs crutches and be able to move on my own two feet.
And besides, it’s quite the fashion statement!
OY! That looks unpleasant! What kind of chocolate do you prefer?
I’m sorry Carrie. I hope it’s not a stress fracture, but at least you’ll get some answers come Wednesday.
Carrie, I read often, but I don’t think I’ve ever commented. I was an avid runner and all around athletic, until I twisted my ankle on some stairs while on vacation. My ankle joint tore out, and I broke my ankle, tibia, and fibula. I was in a cast for 7 months, and I now have a couple of metal plates, screws, and pins, and I’m always in pain. Needless to say, my running days are over. In fact, I can’t even ride a bike, as stopping can be dangerous for me. I’m looking at adult trikes now, though.
I’ve had another baby since then, and have gained a lot of weight.
I’m telling you all of this to say, it’ll be ok. Heal yourself well before attempting anything too physical, even though I’m sure you are straining at the bit. You have a great chance at getting your running shoes back, while I, who has been rather enviously reading about your newfound running love, will have to live vicariously through you.
Thanks, all you guys.
Ken, I’m actually thinking of combining the boot with the crutches, just so I can deal with the way the extra height of the sole makes my hips all off-kilter. I feel sore there after walking on it!
Shana, what about a recumbent bike? Might be better for your dignity.
Honestly, I think both options look pretty cool; the adult trikes look like you could carry a whole picnic with you and make a good day of it. I suggested one to Eric for commuting, but he was nonplussed. (Not an outdoors person.)
I have no chocolate in the house, which is making me crazy, but which is probably a good thing, since I can’t run it off, anyway.
I put some sugar-free chocolate syrup in my coffee, and that’ll suffice for now. Ange, if it ain’t dark, it’s barely chocolate.
Amy, hope your tests yield something soon. I think I hate “no answers” tests the most; what was the point of the experience if they don’t show anything?
Dude, you home birthed two boys. You can get through this. Chin up, young person! Chin up, and bike on!
(Or maybe it’s time to find that swimming center for the triatholon training?!)
