What makes me?

Mom and Eric are bugging me about what I want for my birthday. Most years, I have things bumping around in my head - items I’ve meant to purchase for myself but haven’t gotten around to yet, or things I’ve been putting off as luxuries that can wait. This year, I’m scratching my head, going, “I don’t know…some sweaters, maybe?”
So this afternoon, I tried to boil down what I’m “into” these days. What makes up the person I am? I think it can come down to five things:
1) Good coffee
2) Good wine
3) A good run
4) A good book
5) Good company
And that’s pretty much it. Other things are nice, but I can take it or leave most of it. Funny how, now that I think about it in these terms, I can almost predict or base the sort of day I’m having by how many of those five things I’ve managed to get into the day. A tolerable day needs at least one of them (and up until a few minutes ago, I hadn’t had any, my coffee this morning having been most definitely not “good”; no wonder I was grumpy!), and that’s just to scrape bottom. I usually try for at least two. Three or four of them puts me in a cheerful mood, though the last time I managed to really pull off four (espresso, merlot, 14 miles, and laughs galore) was August 9th. I think if I managed to get all five in, my head might pop off my body.
In other news, Sam had his first official violin lesson today, the first two lessons having been just for the parents. It went about as I expected; he had some trouble keeping his head in the game, but he enjoyed the overall experience. Boy, though, are we going to have to work on rhythm. He can match pitch all right, but…my child marches to the beat of a different drummer, quite literally. ![]()

what about a trip to a marathon not exactly near by.
Like Boston. Or NY?
I have no idea if that is even appealing.
Chocolate is bumped right off the list. wow. Running MUST be amazing.

Well, you know, chocolate is good for the moments in which you’re eating it, but the bliss just fades so fast, it’s scarcely worth it, to me.
Gotta qualify for Boston.
I’m nowhere near that (yet)! In all likelihood, my first marathon will probably be a Milwaukee one (or near there) or Chicago. Sadly, I’ve got a while to wait for either of those; Chicago is actually this weekend, so I have almost exactly a year to prepare!

Check out the Nike Women’s Marathon in San Francisco. I have no idea of the timing, but I hear it’s an amazing race. And no “cable car hills” — you run downhill through the financial district and then along the Embarcadero (wharfs/piers = flat) then you grade (gently) upward into Golden Gate park.

How have you been handling the wardrobe situation? Have you completely replaced all your clothing? Maybe a nice shopping trip!

I think you might need to get your cold weather running gear situation under control. You probably would get some good use out of a gore tex or similar suit during the winter. And you’ll need exercise-friendly head and hand gear.
I’ve loved watching your transition into an athlete! You look great and it’s a wonderful example for the boys.
