Now that I’m awake again

Wanted to expand on the first point of yesterday. Sam and Gabe didn’t have school yesterday (or today, either, for that matter), but I wanted to go on a run, anyway. I decided that although it would probably wind up as a shortened run, due to the boys’ attention spans and endurance levels, I’d push Gabe in the stroller and have Sam follow on his bike.

Well. Sam led us on his bike, rather than follow, and he loved it. Like, really loved it. I planned to take us through the three local cemeteries and back home, which would have been about seven miles, with the option to skip the last cemetery if we needed to. Instead, Sam loved the hills in the second cemetery so much that we did that one twice, and we tacked on a venture out to a woodsy park trail after that. It wound up being a twelve mile run/ride, and he was mad that we didn’t add on a detour to go by his school (“and do a few laps around it!”). I was exhausted and shaking by the time we got home; I hadn’t fueled for that kind of run or brought any kind of gels or sport beans with me. Water alone wasn’t enough, considering I didn’t have much of a breakfast. Note for next time: don’t underestimate a kids’ desire for outdoor fun. Midway through the park, I was wishing I had my credit card with me, so I could pull a Dean Karnazes and have a pizza delivered to us, mid-run.

Gonna be a long day today, notwithstanding Sam’s request from yesterday that we go out again for a run so that we can finally get to his school. Extreme sassiness from him last night resulted in loss of television today, and we’re already having periodic arguments about that. In between, he plays happily and forgets, but when he spies that black screen out of the corner of his eye…I really want an entertainment center that closes and conceals the TV. Out of sight, perhaps out of mind?
