That kind of appointment. Oh, well; the stirrups were warm, and I like my doctor. We had a nice chat, and she did the check quickly and with no discomfort for me, other than the token embarrassment of being in the requisite position.
But here’s something interesting: when I brought up to her that I might want to get my iron checked, as I’d been following my diet closely recently and trying to pay special attention to iron and calcium, she looked over my records and found that when I had a blood draw early this past fall, I had shown up as anemic. Nobody told me! She was surprised at that, and she said that I should have been called, but that it was only a slight anemia then. The physical symptoms I’ve had show me that I probably dipped further in my levels after that, but we can fix this. She’s having my iron checked again, as well as my calcium and vitamin D levels, and my thyroid (as usual).
I was also told that due my aunt’s breast cancer, I get to start having mammograms in two years, not seven. Dreading that, but it’s a necessary thing, and I’m glad we have the technology to do the screening. I’ll make it a birthday gift to myself.
As a bonus, my doc is setting me up with a nutritionist to talk vitamins, minerals, and what exactly a marathoner-in-training could be doing better than what I’m already doing. Now, this, I really am anticipating eagerly.
Apropos of nothing, my very-picky-about-sweets son Gabe is obsessed with my chili cookies. Go figure.
I also have an aunt who passed away from breast cancer so I was told I’m to start mamo’s this year for every two years until I’m 40. Then at 40 it’s every year. I guess every doc has their own theories on when to start them. Best of luck with all your testing!
