Dragging

This has been a day of dragging and lolligagging. I actually hit snooze on my alarm for my run (giving myself a whole four-minute reprieve!), and Sam’s ever-so-slow finishing of his (requested!) oat bran made us head out for the farmers’ market about forty-five minutes after I wanted to leave…putting us out the door just in time to feel the first rain drops hit our heads. No walk for us; we took the car.
Then some too-wild roughhousing resulted in Sam accidentally opening a door onto Gabe’s bare foot, skinning the top slightly; it wasn’t even enough to draw a single drop of blood, but he howled and cried and called for a medic. Putting on shoes was out of the question, even though he did try, so we couldn’t go to the library this afternoon as planned. (This is how I know he wasn’t just doing it for attention; he desperately wanted to go, but every time he tried to gently insert his foot into his shoe, the wails recommenced. I reassured him that we could go tomorrow, and he felt better.)
So our afternoon turned into something different, but not altogether unpleasant.
Sometimes, you have to go for the crayons and colored pencils. A blank page is all you need to refocus the mind.
As for me…

I’ll take it, as far as afternoons go.
