We’ve lived here for a little over five years, and we’re still adjusting. When Alysia came through on vacation last fall, she took one look at our town’s primary beach on Lake Michigan and was aghast that we weren’t spending every available minute there; in fact, we truly haven’t availed ourselves of it much at all. We had gone a handful of times, and it was pleasant, but for some reason we just didn’t think to go often.
Something clicked this year, and suddenly Eric and the boys are in “beach mode.” They’ve gone a few times, and Eric promised them that we could do frequent dinner picnics there, so long as our meal could be packed and ready to go when he got home from work. Yesterday evening, they decided it was a perfect chance to make use of the new sand toys he picked up on clearance (why, it’s “Back to School” time! Who needs summer gear?
) this weekend. My bathing suit from last year doesn’t fit anymore, so I ran by another clearance sale to grab new ones for both me and Eric (he shrunk out of his, too), and then I prepared a quick dinner of wrap sandwiches for Eric and me, filled with an experimental crab salad (I’ll post it on Happy Little Stove in a bit) and ham sandwiches for the kids. Eric got home, we changed, and we were off.
And it would have been a perfect beach night, had it not been freezing.
Okay, so it wasn’t freezing, but temps in the high sixties don’t make me want to strip down to my swimsuit and scamper through the waves! The kids had a blast, though, and we’ll try it again on some upcoming night when the mercury is a titch higher. Sandcastles, ahoy!
(This entry brought to you from an afternoon significantly less pleasant, and one from which I’d rather escape via lingering in better memories.)
Hi Carrie… I just found your blog and I am utterly speechless. I have spent the better part of an hour going back to the beginning and reading your story. You are an absolute inspiration to me! I’m a mom of two boys, about 100 pounds overweight, and getting ready to start the C25K program myself. It is so inspiring to read a story such as yours and feel like maybe I CAN do this. I am so pumped about it. My husband is going to do it with me and our goal is to run the Seattle Jingle Bell 5K in December. Thanks for sharing your story… truly, truly I am grateful. Congratulations to you… your hard work has certainly paid off!
