There’s nothing like a little brother for positive reinforcement. “That’s awesome, Sam! That’s the best drawing ever! Can you teach me to draw like that? Wow!”
There’s nothing like a “Design your own…” project to make me preemptively worry about contact from the school’s counselor. (Gabe is especially impressed by how Sam has apparently given his monster design an attached chainsaw “that can break you in half!”) Then again, it’s a monster-making project, right after Halloween. I’m sure Sam’s won’t be the only one with a touch of the morbid.
There’s nothing like a surprise mention of running in a math assignment to foster an impromptu “extracurricular” discussion. (”So if the third marathoner finishes at 10:47, like it says, then he’s probably qualified for Boston! Um, Sam, you still with me? Sam?”)
There’s nothing like hunger to make anything taste better. Broccoli, NOM, NOM, NOM.
There’s nothing like an eight-year-old reading over your shoulder (”Nom, nom, nom! HA-HA-HA!”) to completely derail your train of thought.
