Bad vs. Good

Okay, let’s total up the day.
Good: Got my run in, if a little slow, due to ice and darkness.
Good: Sam woke up feeling a little better than he did yesterday, when he came home with a cold.
Bad: We were watching some old movies on the computer, and Sam spotted an old plastic truck that we once had. He asked where it was, and I told him I didn’t know. In a fit of nostalgia and independence, Sam decided then to take it upon himself to go in search of the truck…in the basement. Where I was keeping the Christmas gifts, which were yet to be wrapped. I didn’t realize what was happening until he brought a handful of the things upstairs to show to Gabe; he didn’t even know that they were Christmas presents. I shrieked, and he was horrified. Then we spent the next several hours with him alternately telling me to take them back to the store and then calling himself names. Now he’s just working hard to forget everything he saw.
Good: The boys and I had lunch at a place we don’t visit often, and they had a great cream of mushroom soup. So delicious!
Bad: We went in search of snow gear for both kids, and the behavior was horrendous. We were able to get pants for them both, but we had to head for home before I could track down boots for Sam; apparently, his size is nonexistent, since I couldn’t find them anywhere.
Good:

Bad: It’s all deteriorated from there, and I’m just counting the minutes until bedtime.
So it was probably a wash, all in all, balanced even in the dramatic peak (gingerbread construction, done in complete cooperation and harmony and leading to a respectable-looking house) and nadir (the present fiasco). I’m not left with strongly positive or negative feelings, so much as utter exhaustion. Tomorrow begins Eric’s holiday, and I may take the opportunity to escape!
