Starved for family

I did that hill again today, as I have little choice.
When the house is perched on the top of the hill, there’s really only the one way you can go: down. I don’t trust myself to drive down the twisty road, and I don’t know that I could find a better place to run if I made it down there, so…hill work every day until we leave. My quads were fine this morning until a bit after finishing the run; it may build on me gradually. But if I lived here, my butt would look good.
Right now, Eric’s brother is at work, and three of the four kids here are currently napping. Guess which one is holding out? Ahem. Gabe is playing his Leapster on full-blast volume, trying to keep his brain moving and awake, and he complained at me when I turned down the sound on the television, too. Sam was supposed to be reading the book for which a report is due when he gets back from Christmas break, but it took about two minutes for me to find him passed out completely on my bed. The sister-in-law is resting with her younger kid, and Eric is working to unlock all the extra songs on the copy of Rock Band that his brother’s family got for Christmas. All that leaves me with a little downtime before my folks get here to visit with us for a bit. Yay for family!
I had never had the chance to meet my nephew before this trip, and the kid is now two. It is startling how much he looks like and reminds me of Gabe. Such a sweet kid; one can only hope he hasn’t found aspirations of world domination by the time he’s as old as his cousin.
My niece is far more calm than she’s been on our previous visits; she’s turning into a little lady, and I really enjoy talking with her. All four kids are getting along madly – far better than we ever could have dreamed. We’ve speculated amongst ourselves that all of them are simply starved for family, which is bittersweet.
(Heh. Sam just came out and told me that he’d finished reading a few chapters. Oh, it’s going to be golden when it comes time for him to write this report…)
Thought for the future: Linda (my sister-in-law) and I were talking about the Myrtle Beach Marathon; we’ve vacationed there as a group in the past, and this could be an excellent excuse to do so again. She and Bryan both run, though not marathon-length, and she said she might like to do the half. Bryan said he could enjoy the 5K. Can you imagine the fun we could have, all of us? The kids could even do the Fun Run through the aquarium! Must make a note to pencil that into a future race schedule!

Hey Carrie, you know there’s a code to unlock all of the songs on Rock Band, if Eric is interested.
