Race Report: Mount Pleasant Half-Marathon

Okay, I went out too fast; let’s get that out of the way first. For the future, when I do the marathon+-length training runs in a race setting, I NEED to find somebody going my pace and STICK with them, because I obviously can’t be trusted. I managed to hold it longer than I thought I could, but I was hurting by the end. (Almost had a repeat of my “I can’t breathe” episode from the end of MCM, but this time I forced myself to keep walking at a good pace after the finish line, and my air came back.)

Gorgeous day, lovely and sunny and just right in temperature, but the wind was pretty wretched, especially on the southward segments. Yeow. Those exhausted me more than the pace, just about.

Took one gel at the hour mark, along with race course water. Worked well, and I never felt really depleted beyond what was predictable.

So! Official finish time: 1:46:43. Came in 6th in my age group (out of 43) and 48/348 overall. Took 5 minutes off my “PR” (from the WW Festival of Races last year, the only other half I’ve done). Not bad for a day’s work, but tomorrow’s recovery run is going to be VERY, VERY easy. ;-)

Oh! Forgot one of the funniest parts! I just missed the start of the kids’ Fun Run, and though I thought to try to catch up, I could see Eric and Sam moving on the far side of the course’s 1-mile loop, and I knew that at my shuffling pace, I couldn’t make it. So I turned around, walked back to the finish…and there was Gabe running up to the finish line. “Did I win?” he panted. I stared over his shoulder and asked where Daddy was. “I dunno!” he said.

Turned out that Gabe ran the course about half a mile in front of Eric and Sam, leading the group with one other woman. So…yes. Yes, you did win, Gabriel. (His prize: the free ice cream Georgie Porgie’s restaurant was handing out. I think that beat a medal in his mind, no contest.)

Great job!!! I always start out too fast on my own soon. My husband and I are running a half on Saturday and I am more likely to pace myself if I run with him :)
