Did you know that uninsured women are 41 percent more likely to receive a late-stage breast cancer diagnosis and are, therefore, three times more likely to die from the disease than are women with insurance? The National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP) provides low-income, uninsured, and underserved women with breast cancer screening, outreach and case management services, and much more. As of now, the program has served over 2.9 million women and provided more than 6.9 million screening examinations. Through the NBCCEDP, more than 26,000 cases of breast cancer have been diagnosed.

Last year, affiliates for Komen for the Cure provided more than $58 million in resources for screening, education, outreach, case management and treatment services in communities around the country. They also used that money to help secure an additional $10 million in state funding.

Please help me do my part to help Komen support this and many of the other programs for women and men touched by breast cancer! And maybe there’ll be a little something extra in it for you.

If you donate $10 (US) or more, I’ll send you one of these bookmarks, made by me. I am not a beader, but I’m pretty darn proud of the way they turned out. Each one has a ribbon-shaped charm, hanging from a wire-strung chain of Swarovski crystal beads. You’ll need to email me your mailing address after pledging; the Komen site doesn’t request it. (Sean/Kelly and Monique, make sure to send me yours!)
EDIT: Okay, it may ask for your address, but it doesn’t send it to me. Please email!

My fundraising goal is a very conservative $250, and I believe we can reach it. Please help?

If money were no object, and the day was just perfect – not to hot, not too cold, sun shining, slight breeze – how would you spend a perfect day out that had been given to you in the middle of a cold and blustery winter?

I don’t think there’s any question at all that a long, long run would have to be involved. I might go down to Lake Michigan, where there’s a trail that runs near the water, and do at least 5 miles, stopping only when the sweat had stopped coming and my muscles had moved beyond tired into that zone of deliciously buttery and loose.

I’d take the kids to the playground and let them run and shout until they were hoarse and ready to drop from exhaustion.

I’d get lots of grillable vegetables and meat, and we’d cook outside. (Probably not eat out, though; I’ve never been a fan of the flying insects that congregate about food aromas.)

I’d change the bed linens, washing them and letting them hang outside to dry in the sun so they could pick up all the fresh air scents. I’d leave the windows wide open while the beds were stripped so that the mattresses could air, too.

Mostly, I’d probably sit around outside with a goofy grin on my face, taking advantage of every bit of sunlight I could grab, filling up my inner stores to get me through the rest of the winter. It’s zero degrees Fahrenheit outside today, as deceptively bright as it appears, and those inner stores are rapidly depleting, if not pretty much empty, as of now.

I forgot to sign Gabe up at the gym daycare when I was leaving on Friday, so there’s no room for him this morning. This only happens once in a blue moon, but it’s crazy-making when it does. Oh, well; I got him in for the rest of the week (except Thursday, when we have MOPS). I’m down about 85 pounds now, and I really want to get to 100 lost by Cinco de Mayo.

I have a million things to do today, including getting my dishcloth swap package finished. Trouble? Well, it’s snowing, and the temp is dropping, slowly but steadily. There’s not supposed to be much accumulation, though, even though my car, driveway, and street already appear to be quite covered. No storm warning or anything. Venturing out should be okay…good thing I have a few things to do at home before going. The snow is supposed to be “scattered,” so we’ll see if that’s true.

I wish I knew more about wines. I love most merlots, but I haven’t got the palate to discuss whether they’re woody, fruity, or any of that. The best I can normally say is whether the wine is particularly dry or very tannic. Sometimes, though, I can almost taste differences. The merlot Cory gave me for Christmas is very fruity, and nicely so, and tasting that really makes me yearn to taste differences more of the time.

All this to say: sitting here with a glass of wine, feeling more relaxed than I have in a while (Eric is finally home again!), but still somewhat tense and irritated by things that shouldn’t be bugging me.

Sam is working on a project for the PTA Reflections contest, and I keep having to force myself to walk away from him while he works. Some people seem to really have a knack for letting kids do what they wish with projects, which is really admirable; a small part of me, though, is competitively gung-ho, and I keep wanting to offer advice and suggestions. I can’t and shouldn’t, of course, and I know that, so…wine and blogging.

Funny how everybody else in the family is happily absorbed in projects right now. Gabe is building a train track, Eric is cooking (perch en papillote with leeks and tomatoes, a squash and mushroom gratin), and Sam has his art. I’m browsing around, thinking about what to do for the dishcloth exchange, but the comparative idleness is making me itch. I foresee much knitting after dinner!

(Email obfuscation, for the win, there.) KJSL grows ever-more buggy…
