Obviously I can't spell Mention correctly... Also wanted to point out that there is an Ultra forum on Runners World that you can lurk on if you wanted to. They talk about fueling/hydration quite a bit in there. You can find it here:

Found your blog through a friend of a friend. Thank you for posting your progress, I really appreciate reading your journey. I started C25K in January, and I'm 4 runs from graduation. Started off as someone who was 35 years old, 300+lbs, and now I'm 20 lbs lighter and running almost 30 minutes continuously. I haven't really noticed a shape in my body yet but I'm so addicted to the running itself, I can't see how I would stop at this point. BUT I'M RUNNING!

Anyway, I just wanted to post and say "Thank you" for being such a great motivator.

My son is totally a reader. Makes my teacher heart proud! But, for some reason, he's just refused, absolutely refused to read Harry Potter. (Something about the movie scaring him when he was small- he's eight now.) He devoured the Percy Jackson books in a month.

We were at the bookstore and he found a book in the military section on Stalingrad. He asked me for some extra money to supplement his gift card so he could buy the book (560 pages of Russian v. German goodness- apparently NOT as scary as Harry Potter.) I told him that I'd buy it for him AFTER he read Harry Potter. Grudgingly he agreed.

We're going to buy the Stalingrad book tomorrow. (He's reading HP #2 now.)

My 2 boys approach reading in completely different ways. My oldest (9yo) -- LOVES books and reads anything and everything. A library trip means bringing home a bagful of books that he plows through in a couple days. He's a boy after my own heart. My 7yo? Took longer to learn to read, has to be encouraged and guided and prompted and it's a struggle to find anything that interests him. Apparently, he's the more typical one! He prefers non-fiction and always prefers doing over sitting and reading. He does, however, love to listen to audio books.

I don't know why it's surprising how completely different they are, but it always is

I remember and loved "Mixed-Up Files," but there's just no way he could get through it and have a report ready in ten days. :( Sam was sad when she told him his other book was too easy, so I tried to assure him that he could read whatever books he wanted around here, just choosing more challenging ones for reports. He hasn't read another Cam, though. :|

He decided he did want a "city" book, so he's doing "Number the Stars." Fingers crossed!

Oops, sorry. I hit "submit" by accident before finishing.

My kids all went through periods of reading books at lower reading levels at times when life was stressful for them or when their brains were very busy learning other things. If the end goal of reading education is to produce adults who love to read and who understand what they're reading, pushing kids to read books that they have to struggle to finish in time (thereby making reading a chore instead of a joy) seems counterproductive.

I second the recommendation of "From the Mixed up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler" when Sam's ready for it. And for rural, you can't beat "Charlotte's Web."
