"Bad words"

While I'm on this mini-posting spree, I need to just say that I am mad at Caillou. Sam was watching an episode where Caillou and his friend learn the word "stupid." Now, they're told not to use it, which is the point of the show, but all Sam learned was a new word. He's used it on and off for a few days now, despite my consistently telling him that it's not acceptable and that it hurts feelings. "Okay," he says, and he stops...until a few hours later.

I'd honestly rather have him use expletives. Not by much, but I would.

My un-favorite Caillou story is the one in which baby sister Rosie arrives. We read it as a book, but it may be an episode as well. I was not very pleased that it shows Caillou BITING new baby Rosie. Sure, he realized it was wrong afterwards, but I could just see the wheels going around in my daughter's head. I would have rather just not introduced the idea of biting babies at all! It was so not helpful in preparing her for her new brother.

We love Caillou! Although I do know the episode you are talking about, and I wondered about the intelligence myself. Although I would rather have to talk to my son about not calling people names than swearing. Especially since my dh is a pastor, I would about die if he ever swore at church. Stupid I could talk to him about, and even say where he learned it. (excuses, excuses, I know)

Heyas
Its funny you should mention Caillou because I had never heard of it until earlier today when I was reading a People Magazine while waiting at the doctor's office. It said that the 17 year old girl who does the voice Caillou died in a car wreck. I racked my brain trying to remember Caillou but I guess Ive just never seen it - could be that my kids are just too old for it lol
Anyway, I thought it was a sad tidbit of info I would share in case you hadnt heard about it. Cuz Im just a lil ray of sunshine :)

ITA. My daughter told me the other day that her little brother was dumb-oh, did I ever see red! She seemed to get it when I told her not to call people that, and she really did seem surprised to realize that it was mean rather than silly. All the same, I hated hearing it come out of her mouth.

Sadly, Rebecca learned stupid from me :( In my defense, I was upset when I said it, but still, good grief! I'm with you, I'd rather her curse.

Carrie, I agree. I generally like Caillou, though we don't catch it too often, because the sometimes exaggerated "brattiness"--and often more realistic toddler obstinance, sweetness, silliness--of Caillou usually hits the mark, somehow. But words like "stupid" have no place in a kid show.

I despise words like that. My mother punished us much more for calling each other "stupid," "dumb" or "foolish" than she did when we cursed (which in my home? meant words like "gosh," "darn" and "geez") because while expletives are intended to shock, words like "stupid" are intended to hurt.

I can't stand that show either! Caillou is WAY too bratty for my tastes! Or my son's!
LOL!
