Suggestions
Going to the grocery store today to pick up soft foods. Please tell me that I won't be on soft foods for so very long, as nothing on my list so far sounds very appetizing to me:
- Soup (I don't really like many soups except for vegetable and tomato)
- Yogurt
- Pudding (Okay, I can get behind this one, except that I have a feeling I'd get sick of it quickly)
- Applesauce
- Mashed potatoes (which would have to be instant, as I don't think Eric will want to make the "real thing")
- Oatmeal
Any other ideas?

thanks for letting us know how she made out.. I checked in hoping someone had updated. Also, best wishes to Eric's mom... those first few rounds of chemo are hell.
(((hugs))) to all.
Thanks Alysia - I'm so sorry to hear that it was awful. *Hugs* to Carrie, I hope she starts to feel better soon. Tell her lots of people are thinking about her!
Those interested in how Carrie is doing...
I just visited, it seemed that the operation was as horrible as she feared. It does not look like she will be up doing anything tonight! Hopefully the worst is over and now for healing. As well, her mother-in-law just had her first round of chemo today. I'll keep you all updated untill she is back on her feet, hopefully soon!!
I'll, um, share my experience with you afterward. I hope it goes easily for you. :)
Count me in as someone whose recovery was easy. My husband and I had our wisdom teeth removed within a few months of each other, and neither of us had much trouble. We were both loopy and sleepy from the pain meds for a day or two. I actually came straight home from the dentist and ate Campbell's veggie soup with oyster crackers - I had no problems chewing things as long as they weren't *too* hard.
If you can have someone else in the house to watch Sam as much as possible for about 48 hours after surgery, that will be a big help. Again, drugs=loopy. I tried to watch a video while on Vicodin, and I saw the opening credits and the closing credits and nothing in between. This is not a good state in which to watch a two-year-old!
You'll do great - I bet it will be much less traumatic than you're fearing.
Carrie, I know how you feel about this dental visit...I have had dental phobias since I was 9 and broke my two front teeth. It's a nightmare to even think about.
I had my wisdom teeth out, under IV sedation, about 5 years ago. I had very little pain, and was able to eat (I wanted a Whopper with all the fixens!) dinner that same night.
I'll keep you in my prayers, you'll do great!
Popsicles ;-) -- I eat those all year - no matter the circumstances. May not wish for cold things - it all depends on you.
Make sure he/she gives you a 412 syringe for rinsing out the empty pocket - lest you eat a seed along the lines (before the holes close-up) and you've got somethin' sproutin' in there ;-) Kidding! Just a warm water flush (ever so gentle) a few times a day...
I think most of my good suggestions have been posted. The only things I might add are cheeses, for protein. Cottage cheese, or even regular cheese slices wouldn't be too hard to eat if you let them sort of melt in your mouth. Also scrambled eggs, you can add cheese and lots of healing herbs like parsley and thyme.
I've been putting off seeing a dentist myself, and I have things that need to be done. You're a braver woman than I. I'll be keeping a good thought in mind for you for minimal pain and speedy healing. *hugs*
Oh, and just in case nobody suggested it....Milkshakes!
:) Hahahahaha! Me soooooo funny. :)
Robyn
Milkshakes! (add ice cream, milk, and chocolate syrup in the blender for a chocolate milkshake)
Good luck!

I'm probably weird, but years ago after I had my wisdom teeth out, all I wanted was Spaghetti-Os!
Good luck, Carrie, I'll be sending happy healing thoughts your way!
I had no problems at all with my wisdom teeth... the pain of having them removed was NOTHING compared to the pain I was in before the surgery. (and five pounds I lost was not an unwelcome side effect. I'm just saying).
I ate lots of chocolate pudding and those Lipton Noodles and Sauce and Rice and Sauce that come in packets.
Good wishes.
I've never commented to your weblog, Carrie - but I know just how terrified you are about having your wisdom teeth out tomorrow.
I, too, am terrified of dentists. Mine were removed under IV sedation, I came home after the procedure, slept for about 2 hours and then went shopping! I was able to eat normally the next day, and had absolutely *no* pain, and I'm a gigantic baby when it comes to pain. My Vicodin prescription sat untouched and the "worst" thing that happened - was I had a big of a bruise on my right cheek 3 or 4 days post-op. It truly was no big deal, and I hope you're able to have an experience identical to mine - easy and pain free. Good luck!
Maybe I'm in the minority, but my recovery wasn't too terrible. I needed soft food for a day or two and after that I was just really careful not to have anything too hard or crunchy; ie: no chips and salsa. ;)
Things I ate: Mashed potatoes and stuffing with gravy. Refried beans with cheese. Hmmmm...what else? Oh, I really like Cream of Wheat, so I made a large pot of that and just re-heated over the course of the two days. :) And of course ice cream, jello, mousse! All great ideas. :)
I am also a big wuss when it comes to the dentist, and I *swear* it's not bad *AT ALL*! No drills, and you don't feel a thing. :) Plus, the pain that you feel afterwards is such a different pain from the jaw discomfort you are currently feeling. Personally, I can deal with 'sore', but most other pains throw me for a loop. :(
Take care and I'll be looking for an update later this week. :)
Peaceful parenting,
Robyn
Have you considered making fruit smoothies? Yum!
or how about sweet potatoes, for a different potato taste.. yummy baked and then mashed up..
Tuna if you like it is easy
Make a beef stew.. if you cook it long enough, it's easy to eat without chewing.. same goes with a pot roast... when cooked right, that meat melts in your mouth, and you can have mashed potatoes with it and carrots which can be easy to eat without chewing too.
Just make it food that you will like, or you will get frustrated with it all.
Hope you feel better soon!
You can also make fruit smoothies, and if you are worried about getting enough protein, add in some powdered egg whites ... makes it quite frothy, and not eggy (add some sugar in for sweetness, if needed).
Well, the old standby: Jello
Also, ice cream.
And for the super indulgent don't-you-deserve-it treat: cheesecake! If you need it to be even softer, you can microwave it for a few seconds.
For savory, try brocolli/cauliflower cooked really soft with cheese sauce (it'll be gross without the sauce, but quite good with it) and macaroni cooked soft with the same sauce. You can take out the food for Sam and Eric before it gets overcooked and just cook once. You probably don't need a recipe for cheese sauce, but if you do, let me know and I'll post it.
After I had my tooth pulled a few months ago, I ate soft boiled eggs and that helped because it was soft enough to not irritate everything but it had enough substance to feel like real food.
You could also try (as someone else suggested) some baby food. Even better, toddler food. The chicken cacciatore is actually not bad at all, I think it's made by heinz.
