Little stuff
Eric left this morning for South Carolina; he'll be back tomorrow evening, so it's not a huge trip or anything, but it still stinks. (Not like in February, when they're sending him to freaking Germany, and he can't take us with him, and I'm already having a cow over it because he's already been to Europe, and I never have, whine whine whine...)
I just won an auction (thanks for the link, Alysia) for this outfit for Sam in the family portrait. Now I just need to find him a shirt (and a tie?) to go with it. There were others that I liked better, but Eric insisted on a jacket instead of a vest. Old fuddy-duddy. Now, if I can find a cocktail dress (just what exactly is a cocktail dress?) for myself, I'll be all set.
My mouth still hurts, but I've decided that enough is enough with the codeine, so I'm stepping down off it. When I start to hurt, I first try teething tablets and other methods of pain relief, and if they don't work, only then do I resort to the heavier methods. I don't want to wind up addicted to narcotics just because my dentist is a jerk who won't give me better meds that might last longer.
Sam calls Christmas trees "Kiss-me" trees. Really, it's the most adorable thing I've heard in my life.

When E. goes to Germany - have him bring you home LOTS and lots of kindereggs (the chocolate egg w/toys inside ) the ger. are the best ones, and may even have LOTR stuff in them ;-)
I would think colors are acceptable, even bright colors can still be classy and appropriate. It's the cut and style of the dress that really effects it's "class."
How about a mango colored halter top dress... http://www.edressme.com/haltertopdress.html
I think the lines of the dress are very classy and sophisticated and the solid color is bright, perhaps the plum. Plum might look fantastic with Red Hair... and the price is decent. 62 dollars. Couldn't wear that number to church though... and it would be rather cold.
You could also investigate Vintage dresses. www.rustyzipper.com Always in style, always one of a kind and a vintage dress isn't a bad idea when dealing with elder generations as the clothes are usually more conservative and less threatening to people who don't deal with change so well.
I’m still voting on the halter top in purple…
Try to have fun with it! :)
!
What's he doing in SC? If there's a next time, you come too! Well, if you come near Columbia, that is. :)
"Is there a universally accepted alternative color? :-)"
In addition to CA's suggestions, I'd add dark brown. Muted and earthy enough to suit us fair-skinned folk, but dark enough to be formal. Good luck!
For alternative colors, I'd say royal or navy blue, dark green, or red. But really for cocktail it's the length and fabric - anywhere from just above the knee to tea length, and a "dressy" fabric - not a cotton sundress fabric or a woolen suit fabric.
I don't think the color matters TOO much - it's more important that you should feel comfortable in whatever you're wearing.
But what about those of us who look really, really bad in black? It washes me out like nothing else. I look better in neon yellow than I do in black, seriously. Is there a universally accepted alternative color? :-)
"just what exactly is a cocktail dress?"
Assuming that this isn't a rhetorical question, I'd recommend a standard Little Black Dress. Knee length (a little above is ok), something that can be worn with a pretty shawl for dressy occasions, pearls/jewelry for more traditional occasions, a jacket for a business event or interview, etc.
Don't be afraid to spend a little more than normal, this is a good investment. When I started working in 1999, my mom insisted on getting me a high(er)-end,classic Little Black Dress. Good things she did, too, since I've worn it dozens of times and it's still in style and in good shape.
