01/19/2002 Entry: "Chocolate Buns"

Oh, wow. It's been a long time since I've destroyed a recipe beyond all edibility, and I hope I haven't just broken my streak.

French Chocolate Buns - I hope.

1 c. Milk
4 tbs. margarine/butter
2 eggs
1.5 tsp. vanilla
2 tbs. sugar
.5 tsp salt
4 cups bread flour
2 tsp. yeast

Okay, fine. I had all that, combined all that, kneaded all that into a be-yoo-tiful ball of dough. Moving on...

For filling, use semi-sweet milk chocolate morsels or chips, or use a candy bar or two broken into pieces.

Well, poop; all I had was a box of cocoa - the reason for my search for a chocolate-containing recipe in the first place. But wait! A quick scan of the side of the box says that 3 tbs. of cocoa plus 1 tbs. of oil can be used as a substitution! Success!

(Yes, you may have already noticed my error. Keep reading, anyway.)

Roll dough into large rectangle of approximately 1/4" in thickness. With a knife, cut into 16 square. Place several chips (about 1 tbs.) onto the dough and fold over so that the chocolate is encased.

As I was spooning out some of my delicious-looking mixture onto the squares, a small amount got onto my finger. I licked it off and -

URG! UCK! NO!

It was bitter beyond belief. What on earth?

And it was then that I noticed that the cocoa/oil mixture was to be used as a substitution for BAKING chocolate. Ugh! I quickly began adding sugar, butter, vanilla, powdered sugar, and anything sweet upon which I could lay hands.

Finally I had a palatable solution and was able to place the buns on a buttered baking sheet and bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 25 to 25 minutes. They're cooling right now. I hope to God they don't suck.

Sherry, that's better than me; I can't modify for general cooking very well at all. I'm working on it, though! I saw a book at Amazon that I want desperately: How to Cook Without a Book. It's me!

See, now as a total spaz when it comes to baking, I find it so brave when I hear people modifying recipes. I modify for cooking all the time, but baking scares me too much to do that. When I have children, they're going to have to go visit the grandmothers for baked goods I fear... :(
Please tell me it's possible to still learn how to bake properly?

I kneaded the heck out of it and let it rise like bread. It didn't rise to double, but it did rise some. I was adapting a bread machine recipe, so I'm glad it worked!

Sounds like you salvaged the recipe. Hope so!
