04/26/2002 Entry: "In the round"

Oh, sweetness, it's even harder than I thought it would be...
So, I have a question. If you're working in the round and it says to do stockinette stitch, do you knit or purl? Do you assume that you're working on the outside of the hat or the inside? Right now I still have another inch or so of ribbing to do. It's another preemie hat, by the way.

Ugh, I was indeed doing it wrong. Well, I'm doing it right now, but you can see where I had to change directions. Oh, well. I'm not going to frog it since it's just a practice hat, but I've learned my lesson!

you should NOT be knitting facing the inside of the triangle. The needles you knit with should be in the front, not the back. in this picture you have up, if you would pick the hat up the way it is facing the camera, then you really are knitting it inside out. It doesn't really matter, and you would still knit (not purl), but when you're done you'll need to turn the hat inside out. =)

So even though I'm knitting facing the inside of the triangle, I should act as though I'm facing the right side? Or maybe I'm doing it all wrong to begin with...

It is usually knit. When you are working in the round. You can purl it will just be inside out when you finish it!

It is up to you, but the assumption is usually that you will knit all the stitches. If you prefer to purl you can, but when you get to the decreases you will have to p2tog instead of k2tog.
