06/19/2002 Entry: "Mother-in-law"

If you pray, pray for my mother-in-law. Apparently, she is having a psychotic episode, born of a long period of serious depression. Eric's brother says that she is delusional, paranoid, incoherent, and can't be left alone; a babysitter is staying with her during the day.

She'll be getting some psychiatric care next week, though it's uncertain whether or not they'll be admitting her to the hospital. (She says that she doesn't want to be.) Eric's brother said that a visit from us may or may not help, as she may not know we're there. Regardless, Eric says we can't afford to go. He seemed pretty upset, naturally, but didn't want to talk about it.

Prayers would be greatly appreciated.

I don't make it known that I'm some advocate for mental illness, but I have mentioned once or twice in the journal world about my mom having a mental illness for the greater part of her life. My mom had her first "breakdown" in the 70's when my oldest sister was 16. Her second one was 10 years ago, and she's had 2 more ever since.

I've had to grow up knowing and understanding about my mom's illness - manic depression - or bipolar disorder. I am pretty knowledgable about the disease (also from having worked in a out-patient mental health facilty as well), so if you need to talk or questions answered, I'm just an email away.

It's a hard disease to discuss about. But what people don't realize that it can't be helped or suppressed; it's a neurological disorder that also runs in families. I do hope everything turns out ok. It can be a very scary thing to go through - not only for the person themselves, but for the family, too.

I know.
I've been there.

I'll be sure to remember her in my prayers. I'm sorry that this is happening, and that yet another worry is on your shoulders. I'll be remembering you and Eric too.

I'm really sorry to hear that, Carrie. :( I'll be sending good thoughts her way- and to you and Eric. I hope she recovers.
