06/21/2002 Entry: "Sore"
The rather ritzy neighboring housing development is having a community garage sale event today. Sam and I got up bright and early, and I popped him in his wagon to go see what there was to see. I especially hoped to find a couple of little sun hats for him, as he's outgrown his old ones.
Let me say that the development in question looks a lot closer when you're driving than when you're walking, particularly in this heat.
I checked it on Mapquest, and they seem to think that it's about a mile there, plus or minus a half-mile. The development itself is large, perhaps half a mile from one side to the other, and we traipsed through all the roads and avenues in it, adding another mile or two. My feet are killing me, and my arms are sore from hauling Sam and the wagon up and down steep driveways.
I did find him a couple of hats, as well as a toy dustbuster, some baby sunglasses, and some blocks. Total bill, counting the two sodas I bought from enterprising neighborhood youths: $1.95. Not bad! I also ran into our mailman, who happened to have with him a large package from my dear friend, so that went in the wagon, too. Laden down, we began the trip home.
Halfway there, I noticed that Sam was drooping. He had a water bottle, but looked very hot nonetheless. I squirted him with water and helped him drink some more.
Close to our road, Sam began swaying unnervingly, looking as though he were about to fall asleep. Mindful of the fact that it was close to his naptime, I was still nervous enough to pick him up and carry him in my arms. His eyes were clear, but his cheeks were flushed.
We finally got home. I went immediately upstairs with him, nursed him, and he fell into a deep sleep. I was still a bit frightened by his lethargy, so I grabbed the ear thermometer and checked him out. No fever. Phew! Of course, he woke while I was doing that, so I nursed him some more before he fell back to sleep.
He's really exhausted. The loud weather radio beside the bed just sounded an alert, and he didn't even twitch. Poor baby. So, water when he wakes? More nursing, of course. Any other tips?

I know this was yesterday, but lukewarm water play helps, too! In a pool or in the tub. Addison got awful hot like this.
