The baby's asleep in bed. We're at my parents' house, their friends are visiting, and we just finished playing Stare. One hour to midnight.
It's been a fantastic year, guys. There've been some truly horrible moments, but I sit here, at the end of it, and all I can remember is the highest point of it all - possible one of the highest points of my life to date and that I will ever experience. I am so, so blessed, and doubly blessed that I can realize it.
Happy New Year!

Last night, Eric's brother inadvertently let slip that he and the wifey are trying for Baby Two.
ThankGodThankGodThankGod we already have Sam; if I was still childless, that news might have prompted me to strangle somebody.
As it is, I feel happy for them. I know that I am in no way ready for another child right now, either physically or mentally. Until I would be comfortable with Sam weaning (due to a disappearing milk supply), I would not want to risk a pregnancy. More power to the in-laws for increasing the baby count around here, since it won't happen from our direction anytime soon.
Eric's not certain he even wants any more at all. Actually, he's pretty sure that he doesn't. He's willing to let that decision go for a while though, and I am too. No hurry.

You know, it's Aimee's birthday today. Hadn't you better go wish her a happy one?

1. What was your biggest accomplishment this year?
2. What was your biggest disappointment?
That my marriage was so shaken by Sam's arrival. I don't know why I supposed that we would be immune.
3. Will you be making any New Year's resolutions?
Email! I'm making a solemn vow to answer each email as I get it, not relegating it to an "Answer me!" folder or letting it moulder in my inbox.
4. Where do you wish you were celebrating?
I'm happy to be celebrating it with my family, but I do wish that we actually did something for the event.
5. What do you plan to do for New Year's Eve?
Watching TV, gabbing, probably drinking eggnog (if I initiate that).

Okay, so no pictures yet. I'll just tell you a couple of the things Sam got. He loves this wagon, and he will love (once he sees it) this car from my parents. Other toys included this and this. Possibly my favorite gift for Sam, though, was this.

I'm a little nauseated, and Sam's being a little freak-basket, but I had to drop in and say that Christmas around here was almost exactly as I expected. Sam managed to make it about halfway through the festivities on Christmas Eve night before totally going haywire and screeching the place down; I nursed him to sleep, but he woke up a bit later with more screams and hysteria. He didn't recover on Christmas, and today's been mostly a nap-filled day. I suppose he's trying to process and heal.
Yeterday's woes centered around his rear; for some reason, our little exclusively-breastfed baby began producing big-boy "results." Judging from his wails, this didn't please him. Eric and I were instantly suspicious that some well-meaning relative had slipped him some solids at the party, but Rita denied it vehemently. Whatever the cause, it seems to have worked its way through his system at this point.
He got lots of neat things, though. I'll have some pictures later, as soon as I can get the camera's software installed to his parents' Mac, which I'm currently using.

Last night Bekki and family came to visit and we all went to see the lights at the zoo. It was a very pleasant trip, I must say. Even Sam and little Collin seemed to enjoy themselves, all bundled in their slings.

1. What is the weirdest thing you've ever eaten?
Fried cricket. It was at a giant Quad party at the University of Maryland, and some of the food booths were sponsored by a few of the International Students organizations. The guy from whom I ordered had an accent so thick that I couldn't understand him when I asked what a particular delicacy was...until afterward...
Wasn't bad, though.
2. Name one (material) thing you can't live without.
3. Name something you've always wanted to do but didn't have time for.
Finish (start?) writing my book. (Sigh.)
4. What outrageous thing do you wish you had the nerve to do?
Do elimination timing with Sam. Diaper rash stinks. Still, I don't have the guts to try it. Maybe if we had wood floors, or weren't renting.
5. How do you plan to spend your weekend?
Traveling to the in-laws for the holidays. We leave tomorrow morning and plan to go halfway, then finish the trip on Sunday. I expect the rest of Sunday will be spent watching Sam get passed from relative to goofy relative until he melts down.

Before we leave for the in-laws' on Saturday morning:
- Take the Saturn to the dealer to find out why the "check engine" light is on again (stupid car!)
- Find somebody who can watch the guinea pigs, be they kennel or friend
- Failing that, find a smal cage for transporting them in the front seat while I sit in the back
- Buy present for Ken and Barbie
- Laundry. Laundry.
- See if landlord will be able to get mail for us (two weeks is a lot of spam)
- Try to teach Sam to use a sippy cup, in an effort to save my nipples from more carseat nursing

Sam almost ended up taking his first solid food today, though not by any decision of mine. I was holding him and eating a Nutella sandwich when his hand shot out, grabbed and ripped off a handful of crust, and aimed it at his own mouth. I got it away from him in the nick of time; I'm pretty sure that he would have been quite surprised to find out that what he was attempting to eat was actually food.
In other news, my son is a man! Let's just say that he "found himself" during a few of our recent diaper changes. Wow, does that look like it hurts...

Just talked to Eric. He's bringing home masala curry for dinner tonight. Yay! No cooking for me! And my favorite meal to boot. Life is beautiful (except for my stupid ear).

My right ear is absolutely killing me. I've never had an ear infection (to my memory); what does one feel like?

Um, can somebody tell me where the last six months have gone? Wow, that was fast... He's been so happy all day, as if he knows it's a special day.
Happy hemi-birthday, Sammy!

This little baby angel came up to us, crestfallen, after the pageant. She said that she hadn't gotten to see the baby Jesus. We were happy to oblige her.

The Christmas party was lots of fun, though we won a $25 gift certificate to a local store instead of the TV. Sam was a hit; I carried him in the sling, and then Eric and I began trading him back and forth as the food came out and Sam began to fuss. The poor boy was exhausted but couldn't bear the thought of going to sleep while there was so much happening around him. The DJ was nice and even played some Simon and Garfunkel to try to help put Sam to sleep, but it didn't work.
He slept through the night and then some as a result.
We're skipping church so he can nap and hopefully not scream his way through the pageant. Okay, so Eric was the one who wanted to skip church and sleep, but it worked out that way, regardless.

There. I just finished most of my Christmas shopping, all at Amazon. To heck with shopping malls, anyway. I still have to buy for Bryan and Linda, but Eric wants to wait until after the party tonight, in case we win a gift certificate to anyplace we could buy for them. We're debating getting them a set of those 2-way radios; my parents have one and they love it. We want to get one for ourselves when Sam gets older.

Eric has to work today. I hate that. Weekends are supposed to be joint parenting time, darn it! At least he might only have to be there until noon or one.
Tonight is his company Christmas party. I don't think Sam and I will stay through the whole thing; Eric doesn't want to, either, but he plans to stay through the drawing for the TV. That was supposed to be at the end of the evening, but I think many of the salaried folk are pushing for it to happen earlier.
The funny part is, Sam would probably enjoy the tail end of the party, traditionally characterized by a DJ playing loud classic rock tunes while nobody dances. Sam likes classic rock, to the mystification of his parents.

1. What did you want to be when you grew up?
My earliest memory is of wanting to be a "beer truck driver," because I liked to bring cans of beer from the fridge to my dad, grandpa, and uncle. I even had a teddy bear named "Booze Bear." Other career choices included being a nun (I wasn't even Catholic) or an artist (I didn't even like to draw).
2. Do you have any nicknames?
Care-Bear, Bupu (by Eric only)
3. If you could change something about yourself what would it be?
I'd have a longer fuse.
4. Have you ever bought anything from an infomercial?
No, but I have plenty of "As Seen on TV!" stuff purchased in stores.
5. How do you plan to spend your weekend?
We really need to do some Christmas shopping. We may also go to Eric's company Christmas party on Saturday. Sunday is the church Christmas pageant, and we have to attend this year, because (drumroll) Sammy is playing Jesus!

And while I'm giving him his Christmas presents early, I decided to let him "meet" Raggedy Andy. Yum. I think he likes him, too.

Seems to be up and running, at any rate. I'm sure Eric will find a dozen things I've done wrong once he gets home. Not so easy, doing this with a lapful of squirming baby who will insist on biting me on the breast. (C'mon, teeth!)
The other URL will be set up to point here soon, so don't worry about changing any links just yet.
