Christmas tree

On the eleventh day of Christmas, my true love gave to me...

TWO BACKWARD GLANCES:

  • Christmas 1995, when Eric proposed to me. He couldn't quite wait for Christmas, so we decided to exhange gifts over dinner on the twelfth. He teased me with hints that made me think I was getting a pupy or something (what kind of gift "isn't usually wrapped," anyway?), and then he got all nervous and couldn't do it in the restaurant. He ended up takin me outside under the streetlamps, where it was snowing lightly, and he took out the ring box, which was shaped like a rose. I didn't even recognize it as a jewelry box at first; I was just reminiscing about our first date, when he also brought me a rose. Suddenly he popped the top open, dropped to one knee, and the situation became crystal clear. It was a perfect memory, and I recall it often.

  • Not so date-specific, but I have many fond memories of holiday craft season around my childhood home. Mom was a professional crafter, and the holidays meant that our home was full of bustle and the smells of glue-gun and wosd polish. When I was in elementary school, I used to make smal things - candy cane reindeer, bead jewelry, clothespin Christmas trees - an Mom would sell them at her shows for me. Working side-by-side wth Mom like that made me feel positively grown-up, and I cherish the memory of those feelings.
